Troop 71 - Camping Spring/Fall Overnight
General:
• Backpack
• Lightweight 20 degree sleeping bag in waterproof stuff sack (heavy plastic bags will do in a pinch)
• Foam sleeping pad, (Thermarest, Ensolite, or similar)
Wear: (NO cotton whenever possible! - Wear wool, polypropylene, or polarfleece)
• Loose long pants
• Long sleeved shirt (wool or poly)
• Hiking boot, with wool or poly socks
• Poly liner socks (a good idea for comfort with wool socks)
• Wind-breaker jacket with hood (Wear or pack for easy access)
• Wind-pants or rain pants (If you have both, pack them both along)
• Hat/Balaclava, wool, polypro, or polarfleece that will cover ears (Wear or pack for easy access)
• Wool, polypro, or polarfleece mittens (Gloves will do in milder weather)
Personal gear & extra clothing: (Pack in stuff sacks or ziplock bag to keep dry)
• Trail snacks - high carbohydrate, low protein in a form easily eaten on the trail
• Toilet Kit (Ivory soap, toothpaste/brush, comb, deodorant, as needed)
• Toilet paper, white, no perfume, partial roll with cardboard tube removed, in zip-lock bag
• 2 water bottles, 1 liter, with insulating covers if temperature will be below freezing (old wool socks)
• Socks, 2 extra pairs, wool or polypro
• Spare long pants/shirt if desired (wool, polypro, or fleece is best)
• Long john tops and bottoms (Polypro or wool)
• Rain poncho (pack for easy access)
• Wool sweater or heavyweight polarfleece sweater (Wear or pack for easy access)
• Map and compass
• Mess kit (knife, fork, spoon, bowl, plate, and cup)
• Pocket knife (If you have a Totin' Chip - NO axes)
• Trash bags, small, 4 or more (various uses including boot liners)
• Small (AA) flashlight with spare batteries and bulb
• Fire starting kit including matches in waterproof container
• Required daily/emergency medications
• Emergency sewing/repair kit (including for sleeping pad)
• First aid kit (small basic type)
• Sleeping pad (closed cell or ThermaRest)
Optional: (Depending on destination, route, weather and trail conditions)
• Small camera with film and batteries
• Pack cover, waterproof
• Harmonica or other small musical instrument
• Sunglasses - Ultra-Violet blocking lenses
• Sunscreen and UV-protective lip balm
• Survival Kit
Group Gear: (Generally by patrol. Leaders will assign gear to individuals at departure)
• Tent and groundcloth
• Cooking kit/utensils
• Backpacking stove with spare fuel bottles
• Biodegradable dish soap (Camp Suds) (protect from freezing)
• Nylon scrubbies (soap-less)
• Adequate amount of paper toweling with roll removed
• Food & trail snacks, meals pre-measured/packed - Allow extra
• First aid kit, group type, pre-loaded for type of trip
If you don't really need it, leave it out. Ounces add up to pounds!
REMEMBER: NO COTTON CLOTHING ALLOWED ON COLD WEATHER BACK-COUNTRY TRIPS
