Troop 71 - Canoe Camping Pack List
General:
- Backpack, duffel bag or dry-bag (internal frame/frame-less packs) Line w/ heavy garbage bags
- Synthetic sleeping bag good to 30 degrees in watertight stuff sack or double heavy garbage bags
- Foam sleeping pad - closed cell or Thermarest
Wear: (or pack for easy access): (Vary depending on season and weather forecast)
- Loose shorts or nylon bathing suit
- Short sleeved shirt
- Sneakers, water shoes, and/or rubber sandals, "Bean" boots in cooler weather
- Wool, poly or fleece socks (for chilly/windy days/nights, even in summer)
- Wind-breaker/rain jacket with hood/waterproof poncho
- Wind-pants or long pants for bug and cool evening protection
- Comfortable leather-like or cloth paddling gloves that fit well. (Batting gloves work well)
- Wide brimmed hat for sun protection
- Sunscreen and UV-blocking lip balm (the higher the SPF the better)
- Sunglasses with UV-blocking lenses (polarized lenses are great for water surface-reflected glare)
Personal gear and extra clothing: (Pack in dry bags or zip lock baggies to keep dry)
- Trip snacks (high carbohydrate, low protein in a form convenient for eating while paddling)
- Toilet Kit (Ivory soap, toothpaste/brush, comb, deodorant)
- Toilet paper, white, no perfume, partial roll with cardboard tube removed, in zip-lock bag
- 2 water bottles, 1 liter
- Socks, 2 extra pair, polypro or wool (cotton wonât dry well if it gets wet)
- Spare long pants/shirt if desired (cotton, but polypro is better)
- Long john tops and bottoms for cooler seasons (wool or polypro)
- Wool sweater or heavyweight poly fleece sweater/sweatshirt (NOT cotton)
- Small towel (large chamois towel is excellent)
- Map and compass
- Eating utensils (knife, fork, spoon, bowl, plate, and mug)
- Pocket knife (If you have a Totin' Chip)
- Trash bags, large and small, 4 or more (various uses)
- Small (AA) flashlight with spare batteries and bulb
- Fire starting kit including matches in waterproof container
- Daily/emergency medications as needed
- First aid kit (small basic type)
Optional: (Depending on destination, route, weather and conditions)
- Survival /repair kit
- Insect repellent
- Small camera with film and batteries
- Sleeping pad (closed cell)
- Harmonica or other small musical instrument
- Personal canoe paddle
Group Gear: (Usually by patrol. Leaders will assign gear to individual canoes at departure - please leave room)
- Cooking kit/utensils
- Tent with plastic ground-cloth and vestibule
- Dining fly with poles and stakes
- Backpacking stove with spare fuel bottles
- Biodegradable dish soap (Camp Suds)
- Nylon scrubbies (soap-less)
- Food & snacks, meals pre-measured/packed - Allow extra
- First aid kit, group type, pre-loaded for type of trip
- Life jacket for every person
- Spare canoe paddle for each boat
- Extra rope for canoe mooring and tie ups
- Poly Tarps to cover gear if it rains
REMEMBER: Cotton wonât dry quickly if it gets wet. Avoid it whenever possible.
